Palma de Mallorca: city, beach and island base

Walkable Mediterranean capital — not just a fly-in for the resorts.

Palma sits on Mallorca’s south coast with a Gothic cathedral facing the sea, a compact old town you can explore on foot, and a working harbour that still feels like a city. Stay in the centre and you can swim, eat well, and use the island as a day-trip hinterland — without living on a resort strip.

Why Palma

City and sea in the same day
Morning in the Casc Antic — La Seu, Banys Àrabs, Mercat de l’Olivar — then a late swim at Portixol or a stroll along Parc de la Mar. You are never far from the water, but you are also in a real capital with markets, galleries and neighbourhood cafés.

A walkable centre
Much of the historic core is dense, shaded and designed for walking. Narrow streets open onto plaças; the Passeig del Born and La Llotja belt give you a clear spine from harbour to shopping streets. Heat still matters in summer — see our practical tips — but you can cover a lot without a car.

Island base, not island isolation
Palma is the natural hub for day trips into the Tramuntana, coastal towns and quieter beaches. Hire a car when you need it; use EMT and TIB when you do not. The point of Visitor Break Palma is to treat the city as home base, not a transfer lounge.

Practical, briefly

Arriving at Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI)? Options into the centre include official airport buses and taxis — always check current routes and tickets on Aena, EMT Palma and TIB rather than relying on outdated fare sheets. Once you are in town, walking covers most of the Casc Antic; EMT buses fill the gaps; a hire car mainly earns its keep for Tramuntana and further day trips.
